Based on the Sunday Soup model, Saturday Sweets is a recurring community event which gathers the public to learn about and support creative projects in Chicago. In exchange for a small donation, Saturday Sweets guests enjoy dessert and drinks, while listening to presentations by selected artists/artist groups. After the presentations, Saturday Sweets guests vote on which creative project to fund, and at the end of the event, the artist/artist group with the most votes gets the money raised from donations that night.
Saturday Sweets is organized by Revival Arts Collective, a network of Chicago artists committed to using arts and culture as a catalyst for community redevelopment. As part of our larger Revival: Bronzeville initiative, we have chosen to focus all 2013 Saturday Sweets grant distribution efforts on creative projects that are:
- Initiated by artists/artist groups from the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago, and
- Directly collaborate with Bronzeville area schools, non-profit organizations, institutions, churches, businesses, resident groups, etc.
While we understand the need for support of projects that may not meet the above criteria, our interest is in building additional capacity for the arts in Bronzeville in this inaugural year of the Saturday Sweets program. At the end of the 2013 grant cycle, we will evaluate the benefits and challenges of this grantmaking focus and adjust as necessary.
